Patios and paths

The hard surfaces are the bones of a garden. They decide where you sit, how you walk and where the ground changes level.

In short

Stone and paver patios, gravel paths, steps and low retaining walls.

We build patios in stone and in pavers, lay gravel paths, and build steps and low retaining walls. These are the parts of a garden that do not grow back if they are put in the wrong place, which is why we want them on a measured plan before we break ground.

Materials are sourced regionally where possible. Apart from anything else, stone from this part of the country tends to look right in a garden here.

On a sloping lot, steps and a low wall can turn ground that is awkward to walk on into two level areas you can use. We draw that into the plan so the levels, the paths and the planting around them are worked out together.

Patios and paths

When this is the right sheet

  1. You want somewhere level and dry to sit or eat outside.
  2. People have worn their own route across the lawn and it ought to be a proper path.
  3. The garden slopes and needs steps or a low retaining wall to make it usable.
Worth having ready
  • How many people you would like to seat, and what furniture needs to fit.
  • Where you already walk in the garden, and where you wish you could.
  • Any spots that stay wet or wash out after rain.

None of this is required. It just makes the site visit more useful.
